Craft Room Challenge Masking Card

It’s that time again, and our new fortnightly challenge over at Craft Room Challenge as been set by the very talented Esther.  Her remit was;   Masking – ready made masks or with stamps (or both!).  I was really looking forward to this title as I adore stamping and using the masking technique.  I wanted to try something a bit different this time and the new Textures and Trades embossing folder from Tim Holtz that has just come into the shop, along with the new IndigoBlu stamps that I have just started stocking,  were my inspiration.

I had to think quite hard how I was going to get the map image onto the tag which was going to be embossed with the distress folder, as the map was larger than the tag, and I didn’t want any of the it to show up on the raised embossing.  So here’s how I did it;  I cut the tag on the Cricut, next I got a sheet of masking tape and ran it through the embossing folder and cut out the centre so it left me with a mask.  The tag was then run through the folder and the mask carefully placed over the top so only the centre was showing.  The gentleman was stamped slightly to the left with Versafine, a mask was cut and placed over him.  The map was then stamped over the top of the masked gentleman, and while the masks were still in place, Distress Inks were used on the background.  When all the masks were lifted there was no black lines on the raised embossing and the map was behind the man.  The edges of the tag were aged with Vintage Photo Distress Ink, and finally drops of water were dripped onto the tag and blotted to give it an aged look.

For the background the lion was stamped in the left hand corner, masked,  the union jack stamped over the top with Vintage Phote DI,  a mask placed over the top of this. The GB circle was stamped next, masked and Big Ben stamped over the top, then masked.  The map was stamped 4 times at a slight angle and coloured with DI.  All the masks were lifted and the flag and GB circle coloured with chalk pencils.  Finally Vintage Photo DI was blended over the edges.  The sentiment was stamped and seam binding which had been coloured with DI was tied on the tag.

It wasn’t the easiest or quickest project I have ever done, but I thourghly enjoyed making it.
